The Comedic life of Yaaseen Barnes

On The Faizal Sayed Show:  Faizal Chats to Comedian Yaaseen Barnes.

Capetonian one-liner comedian, Yaaseen Barnes, is a fresh face on the local comedy scene and arguably a master of his craft in this genre. First making a splash as the winner of the Joker’s Comedy Championship in 2013, Barnes was quickly noticed and went on to perform at major festivals such as Rocking the Daisies and the Grahamstown National Arts Festival in the same year. This helped him showcase his talents nationwide, subsequently building him a loyal and dedicated fan base – both at theatres and clubs throughout the country, as well as online. 2014 saw Barnes taking the coveted title of GoodHope FM’s Laugh Master, and (unsurprisingly) he was also nominated for the Comic’s Choice Savannah Newcomer of the Year; but perhaps his best-known performance was on Comedy Central, alongside SA favourites like Casper de Vries and Deep Fried Man, in “Comedy Central Presents Divine”. This hilarious battle, of some of the top comedians in the industry, was hosted by the prestigious Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg – and marked Barnes’ standup television debut. As a regular at local comedy hot spots like Jou Ma Se comedy club in the V&A and of course the home of Cape Town comedy, the Armchair theatre in Observatory, it’s easy to get a taste of Barnes’ unique brand of dry but highly intelligent humour.
